Feeling Thankful? Shout It Out!

by Samantha Shaddock

This is the first year I’ve celebrated Thanksgiving with my immediate family since 2006. Last year, I dined in North Carolina with my future in-laws. The year before that, my future husband and I served dinner for our friends in Brooklyn. The year before that, I was holed up in my tiny apartment on New York’s Upper West Side sipping Sprite, plowing through freelance assignments and fighting waves of homesickness and resentment.

I’m thankful for many things — health, love, shelter and sustenance, among others — and I try to take stock of these blessings every day. Speaking specifically to this holiday, however, I am thankful just for being back in this part of the country, with my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, aunt, cousins and sisters-in-law. My husband and I are making pumpkin pie, green bean casserole and Vidalia onion dip (yes, you should be jealous). I imagine if we pull all that off without poisoning anyone, I’ll be thankful for that, too.

I’d like to know what you’re thankful for. Please share.
